Once the USS EUROPA decommissioned in May 1946 from US troop transport, it was decided that the ship was going to be given to France as War reparation for the sinking of SS Normandie by the German navy in 1942. The ship was in service in France from 1950 to 1961 under the name of SS Libertee (SS Liberty) and she was broken up in Italy in 1963
